BIO-REF aims at assessing the sustainability of different solutions for producing, processing, consuming and recycling biomass. Societies will need in near future to be more and more biobased and competition between feeding the world and supplying the world with energy and materials are foreseen to be problematic. To be able to evaluate the sustainability of technological innovations in future societies, we will develop and compare visions and scenarios for sustainable development of combined food and energy systems using a systemic perspective where fuel, food, feed and fiber supplies are seen in a societal context. We are applying different methodologies based on material and energy flows, e.g., different life cycle assessments, emergy accounting, and mathematical modeling.
