Plastic fillings that do not shrink – The start-up company DentoFit A/S

When the Royal Dental College contacted Risø to ask whether scientists could develop a better filling material an interdisciplinary team of scientists from Risø got together, and by means of their common competences they came up with the idea of how to create a new filling material. That was the basis on which the up-start company Dentofit A/S was build.

It has for many years been a problem for dentists that plastic fillings shrink when they set. It means that from when they leave the dentist’s chair with a new plastic filling, patients are at risk of caries and teeth discolouration.

The idea of developing a new material for dental fillings thus springs from a real problem. The Royal Dental College originally contacted Risø to ask whether scientists could not develop a better filling material.

An interdisciplinary team of scientists from different departments at Risø got together, and by means of their common competences they came up with the idea of how to create a new filling material.

In record time DentoFit A/S was established. The start-up company now has the technology needed to produce plastic fillings which do not shrink and is fast becoming so good at making plastic fillings that it will soon be possible to phase out amalgam fillings almost completely. The businessman Per Bækgård, a qualified dentist, MBA and now professional entrepreneur, is the man who has seen DentoFit on its way.
“Given the commercial opportunities inherent in a commercially oriented research and development process, I have been able to devote myself wholeheartedly to the project” says Per Bækgård.
