Wind Farm Services

Risø WindConsult offers Consulting Services and Technical Assistance in wind farm projects.

Clients and Background
Risø has a long track record as consultant on wind farm projects and studies. Risø has since 1980 participated in international wind power projects and related technology transfer in Europe as well as in Australia, Brazil, Cape Verde, Chile, Egypt, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Korea, Mexico, Mongolia, Morocco, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Nepal, P. R. China, Pacific Island Countries, Russia, Somalia, South Africa, Syria, Tanzania, and the U.S.A.

Services, studies and measurements have been performed in close collaboration with recipients on contract with Danish and international authorities, donor agencies and development banks like Danida, Danced, UNDP, the World Bank, and EU-programmes, as well as private investors, industry, power companies, banks and others.

The Consultant's Team
Risø works as sole-, lead- or sub-consultant - in teams or as individual expert. The consultant's consortium composition depends on the specific project requirements, and Risø co-operates with private consulting firms and other institutions in order to provide the required set of expertise for the project.

The Services
Services for wind farm project development and implementation in the various phases of a project include

Preparatory Studies

  • feasibility studies, project design and planning, technical due diligence,
  • wind measurements, wind resource assessment, siting, energy production estimate,
  • grid integration, electrical design and controls.

Procurement, Construction and Operation

  • technical specifications, tendering, contracting,
  • project monitoring and co-ordination,
  • wind farm design optimisation and micro-siting,
  • power curve measurements,
  • performance verification and certification.

Other types of specialist technical services are offered to the individual stakeholders (wind turbine manufacturer, investor, insurance company, etc.) of a wind farm project. The services may involve assistance in and/or assessment of

  • design of wind turbines and wind farms,
  • structural loading - turbulence, extreme winds,
  • performance assessment of wind turbines,
  • grid impact and power quality,
    short-term prediction of power output,
  • training.

Method and Know-how Employed
Studies and technical assistance for a wind farm project includes measurements and modelling for determination of wind farm siting, sizing, layout, energy production calculations, grid design, structural loading, impact on power quality and environment, including noise and visualisation.

As a technology centre, Risø applies know-how developed through research and activities such as

  • wind turbine testing and power curve measurements - accredited by DANAK,
  • contributions to and chairing of international design standards for wind power in the IEC,
  • development and implementation of wind turbine type approval and quality management systems -The Danish Certification Scheme for Wind Turbines

Furthermore, Risø applies state-of-the-art feasibility study methods and tools for the in-depth analyses of wind farm projects - a research subject at Risø. A host of models have been developed at Risø, ranging from wind resource assessment (WAsP), wind farm array layout and energy production estimation (PARK) to power system analysis (WINSYS) and economic analyses and cost of energy calculation (COSTEST). The application in wind farm projects is a special interest of Risø providing feedback for model validation and further development of tools.

60-MW Zafarana Wind Farm, Egypt

The project is co-funded by Egypt and Denmark. Consulting services are financed by Danida and the project is carried out in close co-operation with the Egyptian New and Renewable Energy Authority. Risø has provided consulting services in all phases of the project, i.e.

  • Wind Atlas for the Gulf of Suez, 1991-95
  • feasibility study - as team member
  • wind measurements and wind resource modelling with WAsP, including site calibration and validation of model parameters
  • siting, layout optimisation and energy production estimation for the wind farm
  • contributor to tendering - as sub-consultant
  • wind turbine power performance verification

The wind farm layout illustration is showing each of the 100 wind turbines' location, plotted on a grey-scale contour map of the wind resources at the wind farm site with site boundaries indicated. The lighter the grey the better the wind resource determined as relative annual output of a 600 kW wind turbine at the co-ordinate. The resource varies 25% across the site, which enters into the layout optimisation exercise together with costs of construction and operation.
