I kulstofprojektet er det Risøs opgave at måle udvekslingen af CO2 og partikler mellem havet og atmosfæren samt måle koncentrationen af partikler i atmosfæren. Viden om havets evne til at optage eller afgive CO2 er vigtigt for at kunne forudsige hvordan klimaet udvikler sige.
