Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development, the UNEP Risø Centre

'The UNEP Risoe Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development (URC) supports the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) in its aim to incorporate environmental aspects into energy planning and policy worldwide, with a special emphasis to assist developing countries.

Programme Staff

The UNEP Risoe Centre on Energy, Climate and Sustainable Development (URC) focuses on integrating such issues into national planning and policy worldwide, as well as supporting international activities related to global and regional environmental agreements, such as the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).

URC pursues its objectives in different but complementary ways through:

  • the initiation of and participation in UNEP-sponsored energy-environment projects at national or regional level
  • research and methodological development on energy-environment issues and climate change mitigation
  • technical support to programmes on climate change, like implementation of capacity building for clean development mechanism (CDM) projects or mainstreaming climate vulnerability concerns in to sectoral planning

URC receives is core funds from UNEP, the Danish International Development Assistance (Danida) and Risoe DTU and implements a large number of projects funded by other donors in over 30 developing countries.
