More sustainable energy – less dependence on oil, natural gas and coal Today, renewable energy is produced by wind turbines and silicon solar cells etc., but a number of new technologies are waiting in the wings that will facilitate further progress towards a sustainable energy system which can make us less dependent on fossil fuels. Risø is conducting research into several of these technologies – and we are also researching the opportunities for environmental improvement of the tradítionel combustion technology and for reduced energy consumption.
Combustion technology Risø’s competences within optics, catalysts, membranes and plasma are employed to develop technologies that reduce the harmful substances in flue gases and the emission of greenhouse gases in connection with the combustion of coal, oil and natural gas.
Magnetic refrigeration A magnetic refrigerating machine will offer lower power consumption and emit less noise than the refrigerating plants used today and, moreover, it will not use greenhouse gases. Risø is contributing to the development of a test unit of the machine with knowledge on materials, magnetic processes and mathematical models.
Superconductivity If current is led through superconducting cables, the energy loss can be significantly reduced. Risø is focusing on the development of cheap superconducting wires based on a new, promising superconductor and is also studying the basic properties of the superconductors. |
