Solar Home Systems in India

The project established a finance facility for solar system purchases in rural areas that used donor resources to buy down the initial risks of such lending.

Launched in April 2003, the project helped accelerating the market for financing solar home systems in southern India. The initiative was a partnership between UNEP,  UNEP Risoe Centre, and two India's major banking groups: Canara Bank and Syndicate Bank, and their sponsored Grameen banks. Loan for about 18000 solar home systems has been provided by the partner banks.

Two new but short initiatives, one in the State of Maharashtra in partnership with Bank of Maharashtra, and in the State of Gujarat in partnership with Sewa Bank were launched in February 2007.  Technical and marketing support is provided to the partners in these states.

The project was financed by UN Foundation and Shell Foundation.
