On-line process & quality optimisation for the manufacturing of cast metallic parts

The approach for a new IMS (intelligent manufacturing system) and for Non-destructive inspection in general, will be based on data fusion from two new QNDC techniques: (i) Intensity calibrated high spatial resolution (microfocus) X-radioscopy, and (ii) Multi-sensor vibration analysis (VA) techniques.
The process/condition-related decision taking will be possible due to new multidimensional pattern recognition techniques, coupled with image processing procedures to allow a fast quantitative defect detection and characterisation. An optimum probability of detection will be obtained using data fusion. Establishing links between processing variables, QNDC defect detection capability, defect description and recognition, and assessment of the relationship between flaws/defects and mechanical performance will develop the IMS on semi-solid casting.
