A Collection of Data from Dense Gas Experiments - REDIPHEM

A substantial volume of experimentla data was collected during the Rediphem project on model evaluation

The aims of the database were:

  • to survey a large number of experiments
  • to include relevant background information
  • to assist model developers in finding data for model comparison
to make empirical knowledge avaiable, also for non-specialists

Measured time series, sensor positions, and release specifications were translated to standardized file formats, whereas comments on experimental campaigns, individual trials, and sensor types were included as ascii files. This allowed us (and hopefully also future data users) to create programs which extract information from many trials. A user-friendly data browser offers the possibility to read the descriptions, inspect the sensor layout by 3-D graphics, and produce x-y plots of measured time series.

The REDIPHEM project (1992-1995) was part of the CEC DG XII ENVIRONMENT shared cost R&D programme.

Contents of the database
The database contains measurements from the following field experiments

  • BURRO LNG experiments by Lawrence Livermore Nat. Lab.
  • Selected COYOTE LNG experiments by Lawrence Livermore Nat. Lab.
  • DESERT TORTOISE NH3 experiments by Lawrence Livermore Nat. Lab.
  • Selected EAGLE N2O4 experiments by Lawrence Livermore Nat. Lab.
    LATHEN C3H8 experiments by TüV/Risø
  • FLADIS NH3 experiments by Risø/Hydro-Care/FOA/CBDE
  • A few THORNEY ISLAND Freon experiments by HSE et al.

plus wind tunnel experiments from

  • University of Hamburg (generic obstacles) from MTH BA plus early work by G. König
  • Warren Springs Laboratory (repeat experiments) from MTH BA
  • TNO, from MTH BA & FLADIS

This amounts to 257 release scenarios with a total data volume of 135 MB. The database is available via FTP (for free), MO-DISK or CD-ROM. Contact Søren Ott or Morten Nielsen for information on data dissemination - or in case you want to contribute with your own data set on heavy gas dispersion!

Add-on datasets
We encourage heavy gas researchers to distribute similar data in the REDIPHEM database format. At present, the available external datasets are:

a 3-d view from the interactive data browser
A 3-D view from the interactive data browser

New (2006) data browser - highly recommended!

The original REDIPHEM data browser was programmed in DOS and does not work on modern Windows Systems. However, Nijs Jan Duijm has made a new windows version with the same functionality and compiled windows help files. To use this system

  1. Install the REDIPHEM data set (if you don't already have it)
  2. Install the new data viewer
