Mediterranean Renewable Energy Project (MEDREP)

The project aimed at providing financing mechanisms to support market deployment of specific renewable energy technologies in Egypt, Morocco, and Tunisia.

Based on a baseline assessment conduced by the project, solar water heating was the technology selected in all three countries with highest potential for market deployment. In Tunisia, an interest rate subsidy is being offered to residential households to install solar water heaters. By first quarter of 2007, more than 15,000 systems where procured and installed in Tunisia. A similar mechanism was designed in Morocco and Egypt for the hotels sector.

The project was funded by the Italian Ministry of Environment (IMET), and jointly implemented by UNEP-DTIE and UNEP Risoe Centre.
