Alleviation of Poverty through Local Energy Services (APPLES)

The project focused on energy access in poor rural communities in South Africa.
The objectives of the project were to identify and demonstrate the best practices for energy provision to four poor South African target communities. Working towards that end, the project aimed to develop and disseminate a deeper insight of energy needs and priorities within those communities.

The project aimed at strengthening an embryonic network of energy centres in South Africa. APPLES was implemented by a consortium of European and South African partners including Risoe DTU. Funding came from the European Commission through its COOPENER Programme.
