Sustainable energy

Bioenergy

Risø DTU does research into technologies in order to convert biomass into bioenergy and biomaterials. We are also working on promoting the innovation and growth of Danish companies and Danish agriculture

Fuel cells & hydrogen

Risø DTU does research into fuel cell technology – from materials to effect - supplying the basic knowledge for the Danish production of SOFC fuel cells.
In addition we use fuel cells to convert surplus electricity from wind turbines e.g. into hydrogen.

Fusion energy

In a fusion power plant, light atomic nuclei fuse into a larger atomic nucleus whereby energy is released. The process imitates the sun’s energy production and has the potential of becoming a both sustainable and reliable energy source. With fusion technology, you can get the same energy from one litre of water as you get by burning 300 litres of oil.

Climate & energy systems

Risø DTU contributes to development towards a sustainable and reliable global energy supply through research into energy policies and energy systems focusing especially on environmental and climatic consequences – including in developing countries.

Solar energy

Today solar energy accounts only for a minor fraction of our energy consumption. Our future sustainable and fossil-free society will, however, need to rely on solar energy as one of its major energy sources, simply because the sun is our most abundant source of energy. Risø DTU’s Solar Energy Programme develops emerging solar technologies capable of providing energy at a viable cost and in the volume needed for turning photovoltaics into a major contributor to our total energy supply.

Wind energy

Risø DTU develops wind energy through research into key areas such as meteorology, wind turbine technology and power system integration. In addition we are involved in test and measurements, standards and certification as well as international projects. The research takes place in cooperation with the wind turbine industry.
