Risø DTU is pleased that IPCC receives this recognition and that the climate issue gets the attention it deserves. We are proud to have contributed to IPCC’s work.
Risø’s contribution to IPCC’s Assessment Reports
IPCC publishes every 6 years full assessments covering the three working group topics: The Scientific Basis, Impacts Vulnerability Adaptation and Mitigation (WGI, WGII and WGIII).
The 4th Assessment (AR4), consisting of three working group reports, has been published in 2007. The final Synthesis report will be published in November, ready for the UN climate conference at Bali in December 2007.
Risø contributions to the report from WGIII ”Climate Change 2007 – Mitigation”:
- Senior Research Specialist Kisten Halsnæs is the Convening Lead Author of one of the 13 chapters.
- Kirsten Halsnæs is also one of the Lead Authors of the synthesis report.
- Senior scientist Jørgen Fenhann is one of the Lead Authors of the chapter about energy supply.
The work of IPCC is headed by the IPCC Bureau which has 25-30 members. The Chairman is Dr. R.K. Pachauri who is also the Director-General of the Tata Energy and Resources Institute – TERI in India.
Head of Department Hans Larsen from the Systems Analysis Department, Risø DTU, has been a member of the bureau sharing an European post with a German representative. The Head of the UNEP Risø Centre, John Christensen held this position earlier.
The bureau has chosen the teams of authors for the chapters in the three assessment reports on the basis of suggestions from governments around the world. The members of the bureau also act as review editors who ensure that the teams of authors handle received comments correctly.
Scientists from Risø (Kirsten Halsnæs, John Christensen and others) also participated in writing of the 2nd and the 3rd assessment report published in 1995 and 2001.
Scientists from Risø have contributed to IPCC special reports
The IPCC Bureau initiates preparations of Special Reports on selected topics. Scientists from Risø DTU have contributed to several reports e.g.:
A new special report on renewable energy is under preparation. Hans Larsen is member of the programme committee.
