WAsP celebrates anniversary

The PC program WAsP celebrates its 20th anniversary this year. The program is able to predict the production from a wind turbine or a wind farm fairly accurately. Since 1987 Risø National Laboratory has sold more than 2000 licences to companies and institutions in over 100 countries around the world.

WAsP – the Wind Atlas Analysis and Application Program developed at Risø National Laboratory – is considered to be the industry standard within microscale wind resource assessment and siting of wind turbines and wind farms. The program contains a number of models which can describe the wind flow in different types of terrain and close to sheltering obstacles.

As this map shows, WAsP is used all over the world. In Russia and several European and African countries it has formed the basis for national wind atlases.

Every year the WAsP developers are holding courses in different parts of the world. So far they have educated more than 500 users at 50 courses. In addition, 84 users have become certified users by passing a certification examination. The next course will be held in Shanghai in November.

Recently WAsP was launched in version 9.0 and version 10 is already on its way with a new flow model enabling the program to calculate wind resources in steep terrain better and faster.
