Risø DTU project nominated for the Elforsk Prize 2007

’Development of LED light sources and lamps’ is among four projects nominated for the Elforsk Prize 2007. The project combines technology and design showing how the energy-efficient diode light may replace incandescent and halogen light in the lamps of the future.

The most essential criteria for winning the Elforsk prize are innovation, impact, results and realization potential. The projects will be presented on 24 May 2007 at ELFORSK FORUM 2007 in Eksperimentarium [Denmark’s Science Centre, a place where touching and using the exhibits are not only allowed but are positively encouraged]. Minister for the Environment, Ms Connie Hedegård, will give away the Prize to the winner, and Henriette Honoré will be the compère.

The project involves scientists from Risø DTU, designers and development/production staff from Louis Poulsen Lighting, The laboratory Lys & Syn, RGB Lamps and Dong Energy.

In 2005, the designers followed a Risø course in technology connected with light and light diodes. Since then they have been working with Risø scientists in a laboratory at Risø, especially fitted for the purpose. So far this work has resulted in four fascinating lamps with diode light sources that combine high light quality with low energy consumption. The lamps were presented to the public at an exhibition in Illums Bolighus in connection with the Night of Culture [held in Copenhagen on 13 October 2006].

”The lamps represent a new way of lighting”, says senior scientist Carsten Dam-Hansen, one of the four Risø scientists who participated in the project.

The scientists have been working on dimensioning and on computer modelling of light diode systems, the making of special lenses to obtain the right distribution of light and the composition of colours in new diode light sources that offer the same light quality as incandescent light.

The project ”Energy savings with diode light” won the Elforsk Prize 2006. Read about it here
